Before I get all the way into my “shake” talk, I want to tell you about an exciting new photo service! I LOVE Instagram, but you already knew that. I’m working with TurnGram to bring your photos to life! Use this link to sign up for a monthly delivery to a recipient of your choice and they will receive a few of your favorite Insta-photos each month! Hello, most amazing grandparent gift!
Is anybody else around here freaking out that we are officially in the holiday season now? We’re in a countdown of days (yes, only days!!) until Thanksgiving and Christmas will be coming up right after that.
Of course, this is the time when all the treats come out and while I LOVE all the fun food stuff, we’re making an effort to balance it out with the healthy things, too. We want to feel good while we’re out doing all the holiday things!
One of the habits that we are consistent with is the healthy shakes. This is certainly not to say we are perfect all the time. The amount of Halloween consumed last week was of truly epic proportions, but we are trying to all live our lives in balance, right? I mentioned that Natalia is on to me with the green shakes lately, so I’ve had to get creative. We have had tons of beautiful papaya at our stores these past few weeks and guess what? Papaya makes a “pink” shake that can get past even the most discerning toddler. Wait! You hate papaya? Don’t stop reading…
I know, I know. Papaya is a polarizing food. It’s definitely on the “love it or hate it” list. However, with the amount in this shake (1/2 cup) plus a whole banana, you can get all the awesome digestive properties of papaya and disguise the taste if you’re not a fan. All three little ones (and us big ones, too!) have been drinking this on repeat. Believe me, they are getting p-i-c-k-y so their love for this surprised me- and I’ve been running to the store for papayas every few days.
Apparently there is perfect tropical weather in some other part of the world because the most beautiful, ripe papayas have been showing up all over here in New York. Don’t let this fruit intimidate you! They are soft, easy to cut, and the seeds come out quickly. Use what you need for this recipe and freeze the rest in single servings for future shakes!
Last things, if you have a little one with issues like constipation this shake can seriously help. If you’ve never given them papaya before do a small taste test to check for allergies- wait 24 hours to make sure there is no reaction.
Finally, if papaya is not available in your area you can substitute 1/2 cup of mango, apple, or berries. Try it, enjoy it, and love it because it is amazing!
- 1/2 cup papaya
- 1/2 cup strawberries
- 1/2 cup cucumber
- 1/2 cup baby kale
- 1 banana (sliced)
- 1 tablespoon hemp hearts **
- 1 date (chopped into small pieces)**
- 1 cup ice
- 1 cup water or almond milk
- Put all ingredients in your blender.
- Blend on high speed until it becomes smooth and creamy.
- If the mixture appears too thick, add more water or almond milk depending on your smoothie thick-ness preference.
- Makes 3 regular servings or 2 large servings.
- **If you don't have hemp hearts or dates on hand you should still try this. It is delicious without them, but amazing with them!
